- The animation/art style and character design may be influenced by the 1950s-60s manga, Astro Boy.
- Astro Boy's animated adaptation defined the style of animation known as "anime."
Film[]
- The creation of food from discarded bodies in the episode "Abipa, The Utopian Planet" may be a reference to the 1973 film, Soylent Green.
Literature[]
- Kaiba's character design, the series' animation/art style, and several plot elements are likely influenced by the 1943 novella, The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince.)
